Here are our top 5 tips for writing your first (or 50th) blog post:
1. Learn what makes a quality blog post, from SEO to selecting images.
If you have experience writing intentionally for other purposes, the advice at Yoast.com will make a lot of sense. Why? Because writing well for SEO is a lot like writing well for anything. Take a look and see. They also have an interactive SEO plugin for WordPress blogs to analyze your writing so you can learn from it.
2. Figure out when you like to write and schedule it on your calendar.
Believe it or not, our founder loves writing when the moon is full because her ideas flow freely. She also prefers to write creatively in the morning and analytically in the evening. Reflect on your habits and use self-awareness to your benefit.
3. Divide the process into smaller parts and spread them out over time.
There’s no rule that says you have to write and publish a blog post in one sitting, or even in one day. Your writing will be clearer and easier to read if you micro-commit to a series of shorter writing appointments because you can mentally refine your ideas between sittings.
4. Write at a library or a café if you find it a challenge to concentrate.
Home and work may not be distraction-free because we are conditioned to notice things there. When we go somewhere else, we are free to disengage with our surroundings regardless of whether it’s quiet or not. Writing in different places can also be inspiring.
5. Experiment with artificial intelligence (AI) to generate ideas and make an outline.
A colleague recommended AI to our founder, and at first, she totally resisted the idea of using it. Then it dawned on her that she could use AI as a collaborator and a motivator, not simply to do the work for her.
